In order to commence formal tuition you will need to be at least 17 years old as this is the minimum age that you can legally drive a car on public roads in the UK. You will also require a provisional driving licence - click here for details.

You are advised to ensure that your eyesight conforms to the minimum standards prior to commencing tuition.  The Law requires that you can read an old style number plate in good daylight from a distance of 20.5 metres (67 feet) and the new style number plates  that were introduced in September 2001 from 20 metres (66 feet).  Glasses or contact lenses may be worn, but you must wear them whenever you drive.

It is essential that you are familiar with the Highway Code as this contains the information that you will need to know in order to pass the Theory part of the UK Driving Test.

Passing the UK Driving Test enables you to drive on your own, but the learning doesn’t stop there.  Statistics show that new drivers are more likely to have an accident in the first two years of passing their test than at any other time in their driving career.

In association with insurers and the driving instruction industry, the DSA has designed Pass Plus, a training scheme for new drivers.  Steve Jackson has been accredited as a Pass Plus instructor and offers a course of instruction that may significantly reduce the cost of car insurance for new drivers.
